SDRs vs AI: will AI remove the need for SDRs?

What AI has already automated, and what it hasn’t touched.

Will AI remove the need for SDRs? I get this question on almost every call now, so let's be straight about it.

AI has already taken over the parts of the SDR job that were never really the job: manually building lists, writing generic first-draft emails, logging notes into a CRM. Tools do that faster and cheaper than a human ever will.

What AI hasn't replaced is judgement: knowing which 20 accounts in a list of 2,000 are actually worth a personalised approach, reading a prospect's tone on a discovery call and adjusting on the fly, and building the kind of trust that gets you an intro to the economic buyer. That's still a human skill.

The SDRs getting hired right now are the ones using AI to do the busywork faster, so they can spend more time on the parts of the job that actually move a deal forward. The role isn't disappearing, it's shifting up a level: less admin, more strategy.

My honest advice: get fluent with AI tools for research and drafting, but don't let them do your thinking for you on a call. That combination, AI-literate and genuinely sharp in conversation, is what founders are hiring for.
